A large vintage 1960's stoneware tile or wall plaque by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen

This vintage stoneware plaque was designed and made in the 1960's by German artist Marianne Starck (born 1931) at the Michael Andersen ceramics studio on the island of Bornholm in Denmark. Impressed on the reverse side with the Michael Andersen mark of a shield with three fish, Marianne Starck's MS monogram and the number 6356, the plaque is in excellent condition. A recess in the top edge on the reverse side allows the plaque to be hung on a picture hook.

The artwork's shiny blue glazed circles provide an interesting contrast with the matte-glazed brown spider's web that encloses them and with the rough-textured unglazed background. The tile is very characteristic of the stoneware ceramics produced in the Bornholm studios during this era including Soholm Stentoj along with Michael Andersen. These tiles are robust enough to be used outside as well as indoors, and are often seen in Denmark hanging beside a front door or embedded into an exterior wall. This particular example is a large one of its kind at approximately 23 x 30cm (9 x 12 inches), and weighs around 2.25kg (5lbs).
