A large vintage 50s/60s ceramic liquor jug with sculptural form and rich lava texturing |
||
|
The art pottery studios of Italy and in particular San Marino that produced Fantoni and Gambone-influenced pieces in the 1950s and 1960s also made bottles and flasks for liquor companies including Drioli. Standing 35cm (14 inches) tall, this particular example has a strongly zoomorphic sculptured form with its duck-like belly and arching neck. The specific liquor company it was produced for is unknown, but a cork rattles around its (now empty) white-glazed interior. Framed by the extensive lava texturing, the scraffito and enamel-glaze artwork depicts on one face of the bottle a shrine on an abstract rocky outcrop of pink, yellow, orange and white slabs, while the other face carries a jewel-like scattering of alpine flowers. There is some scuffing to the lettering etched beneath the shrine artwork, which reads "Alassio Cappella Votiva." Otherwise the ceramic is in excellent condition with no damage. It is stamped to the base "Stella Polare Ceramica RSM", indicating that it was produced at one of the many small studios of the Republic of San Marino. For more images please scroll down the page. |
