Vintage Italian lava dish with scraffito ninja

This vintage Italian ceramic dish is decorated with an unusual ninja-like warrior motif in the classic combination of Fantoni-style scraffito-outlining, glassy high-gloss enamel infills and matte lava-glaze framing that was widely employed by the small pottery studios of San Marino in the 1960s. The dish measures 21.5 x 21cm (8.5 x 8.25 inches) and has a hole through the reverse side to allow wall hanging. There are five strips along the rim edge with a length of around 1cm each where the white icing-like top glaze has chipped off the bubbly lava – click on the images to see larger-scale versions for detail.
