Architect Jo Hammerborg designed this modernist pendant light, entitled Saturn, for Fog & Morup in the 1960s and it was produced into the 1970s. The final picture below is reproduced from a late 1960s Fog & Morup catalogue and shows the Saturn along with other lamps Hammerborg designed in this copper and black range – from left to right they are the round Dano, the rectangular Dano, the Tunika, the Juno, and finally the Saturn.
The inside face of the black lacquered metal outer section is painted orange, and when the lamp is lit, reflected light from this orange interior and the copper sections above and below combine to produce a warm and colourful glow (see third large picture below). Examples of this vintage light are rarely found today with both top and bottom opaque acrylic plates intact, but here they are present, producing a soft but effective light without any glare.
The lamp has a diameter of 30cm (approximately 11.75 inches) and a height of 19cm (7.5 inches), and takes a standard sized screw-fitting bulb up to 100w. It is in very good condition, with minimal signs of previous use beyond some age spots to the copper.
