A pair of vintage 1950s metal and opal glass pendant lamps by Nordisk Solar Compagni of Denmark

Throughout its heyday in the 1950s and into the 1960s, Nordisk Solar Compagni commissioned a small number of prominent architects and designers to produce its lighting designs. These included Max Brüel, Jørgen Kastholm and Preben Fabricius, Acton Bjørn, Sigvard Bernadotte, Sven (aka Svend) Middelboe and Jørn Utzon – who later and most famously designed the Sydney Opera House.

The designer of these particular Nordisk Solar Compagni lights is unknown, but their classic ‘chimney and skirt’ structure makes architect Sven Middelboe the most likely candidate. In midcentury modern colours of forest green and dark aquamarine, the pair are in very good condition with no damage to the glass, no scratching or chipping to the paintwork on the strong, heavy-quality metal shades, and just a little scuffing to the brushed aluminium caps. The lights have a diameter of 38cm (15 inches).
