This vintage Danish pendant light is closely modelled on Jo Hammerborg's Saturn lamp for Fog & Mørup and is often mistaken for that classic design. This is, however, a copy produced in the 60's or 70's by another Danish lighting company of the period, Vitrika.
With a diameter of 27cm (10.5 inches) and a height of 17cm (6.75 inches), this Vitrika version is a fraction smaller than the Hammerborg Saturn. It also differs in having a flat cap top instead of Hammerborg's slim stem, and while the F&M Saturn has opaque acrylic plates at both top and bottom to prevent glare, this Vitrika version has an acrylic plate at the top and a deep, heavy-quality textured glass layer at the bottom for the same purpose.
In both versions the outer black band serves to deflect direct light emerging from the sides, softening it as it reflects back onto the rings above and below, which in this case are brushed aluminium and take on a silvery glow from the reflected light. The lamp is in good condition with a little general ageing and wear.
