A shag-pile pure wool rya Spotlight rug designed by Verner Panton for Unika-Vaev circa 1961

This very rare vintage Spotlight rya was designed in the early 1960's by Verner Panton and produced by Danish textiles company Unika-Vaev A/S. The rug measures 140 x 230cm (approximately 55 x 90 inches) and has a dense shag pile in a spectrum of shades of orange through to brown, radiating in concentric circles on a grid of black squares.

The rug is in good condition generally, but there is wear along a one-metre stretch of one edge. This can be seen to the right in the first picture below and at the top of the second picture. The final three small pictures are from (left to right) the 1999 Phillips Design Trilogy catalogue cited below, a 1964 edition of a leading Danish homestyle magazine showing the rug in a contemporary Danish modern room setting, and a 1965 Unika-Vaev advertisement in which the rug can be seen in a different colourway.

Literature: Phillips Design Trilogy Part 1: Materials and Processes of the Twentieth Century (Monday 6 December 1999), pages 42 and 54.
