An original 1950's/60's Danish midcentury modern rya rug with abstract art design in reds

This vintage original pure wool midcentury modern artist-designed rug was made in Denmark in the 1950's/1960's. Its bold and colourful abstract design is very much in step with fine art of the period, and indeed the rug was intended – as rya rugs generally are – as an artwork in its own right.

The design is worked in many warm red-spectrum colours, from oranges through various red tones to burgundy and dark grape. The rug has a shorter pile than many ryas, approximately 2cm (0.75 inches), and measures 138 x 195cm (54.5 x 76.5 inches). Careful inspection reveals some six or so individual threads missing along one outside edge, but this is not noticeable from a topside view and appears stable. Otherwise the rug is in very good condition with no visible wear to the pile.
