An artist-designed pure wool rya rug hand woven in the 1960's from a kit by Cum Rya

The Cum Rya company was based in Copenhagen and during the 1960's produced a wide range of top-quality rya kits which were extremely popular not just with their Danish customers but also in the United States, where Cum Rya had a thriving export market. The company offered an extensive catalogue of rya designs produced by 16 artists, mainly from Denmark and Finland, with backgrounds in various different media including painting, sculpture and ceramics as well as textiles, and including Ole Schwalbe, Mogens Andersen and Robert Jacobsen.

This small Cum rya has a vibrantly colourful design evoking the plumage of an exotic tropical bird. The rug is in excellent condition and measures 60 x 95cm (23.5 x 37.5 inches), or 60 x 110cm (23.5 x 43.25 inches) including the tassels, which are also in excellent condition without any of the usual discoloration or damage.
