A vintage handwoven pure wool Cum Rya rug designed in the 1960s by Danish artist Jette Thyssen

Cum Rya was the leading Danish producer of handwoven rya rugs through the 1960s, with a large catalogue of artist-designed products that could be purchased either ready-made or in kit form. The rugs were extremely popular both in Denmark and in the United States, where a large export market flourished.

This pure wool shag pile rug is a 60s Cum Rya designed by prominent Danish artist Jette Thyssen (1933– ). The design, entitled Mascot, is rendered in bright orange and brick orange, milk and dark chocolate brown, and charcoal grey and black. Measuring 79 x 137cm (31 x 54 inches) without the tassels or 111 x 137cm (43.5 x 54 inches) including the 16cm tassels at each end, the rug is in excellent condition, clean and without any damage. The weaver has signed the rya on the Cum Rya label on the reverse side and dated it 1967–1968.
