In excellent condition, this colourful vintage 1960s/1970s textile artwork panel measures 95 x 175cm (37.5 x 69 inches) and is finished on all sides. Produced by Sodahl Design A/S of Denmark, the textiles company founded in 1963 by artist and designer Hans-Jürgen Schöbel, the artwork has been screen-printed onto a jute-polyester mix hessian-like textile panel with slots running along the top and bottom edges to take rods (not supplied) for wall hanging.
The cubist-style artwork, entitled "Hommage A Samarkant", depicts the exotic and bustling city of Samarkand on the Great Silk Road, one of the world's oldest inhabited cities and a UNESCO world heritage site. The artist is not credited but the work carries the Sodahl Design monogram in the bottom left corner. The colours in the screenprint are evenly balanced between a spectrum of cool blues, turquoises and greens, and a range of warmer earth-like colours including burnt orange, yellow ochre and metallic gold which provide a sunset-like glow across the cityscape.
