Scraffito & lava wall plaque enamel glazes Italy

This hand-produced wall plaque can also be used as a shallow dish and is a spectacular example of a style that was derived from the influences of Cubism and Fantoni and was widely used by pottery studios in Italy and San Marino in the 1950s and 60s. The style is defined by the use of three elements: scraffito outlining of the subject matter (in this example a still life of fruit, fish, candle and a jar or flask), smooth enamel glazes usually including selenium red, and areas of bubbling lava-like glaze. The artistic influences mentioned above are extended in this particular piece to include Yves Klein's IKB, aka International Klein Blue, a vivid ultramarine patented by Klein in 1961 which appears in both matte and glossy glazes in the piece. The plaque measures 11 x 32 cm and is in excellent condition with no damage.
