Hydra II pendant light designed by Jo Hammerborg for Fog & Mørup, 1960s

Hydra II pendant light designed by Jo Hammerborg for Fog & Mørup, 1960s

Hydra II pendant light designed by Jo Hammerborg for Fog & Mørup, 1969

A decade after creating his seminal and much-copied Saturn pendant light, Jo Hammerborg designed the Hydra II – a lamp of identical proportions to the Saturn and offering the same effective but completely glare-free light source, brought up to date for the space age. The Hydra has a diameter of 30cm and a height of 20cm, and its strong, white-lacquered metal exterior is topped by a series of light-diffusing rings and a bright silver chrome cover for the bulb holder. As with the Saturn, glare from the underside is eliminated by a textured acrylic disc held in place by a metal clip-in frame. A typically understated Hammerborg for Fog & Mørup design, the Hydra was marketed in 1969 as the first item in Hammerborg's White Line range of "attractive, simple lights [that] can be used in almost any interior, irrespective of colour key or materials".

This particular Hydra II example is in excellent condition and retains its original textured perspex diffuser, which has a not uncommon quirk, namely that it warps slightly when cool (see images) but slowly flattens out as heat from the bulbs gently softens the perspex, when it remains flat until it cools and warps slightly again. Naturally, if the lamp is hung low in the classic Danish style over a dining table or coffee table, the warp will not be visible. The Hydra takes a standard E27 Edison screw bulb max 75w (not supplied).
