Finnish designer Kaj Franck (1911–1989) studied furniture design at the Central School of Industrial Design in Helsinki and in 1945 began to work with Arabia, eventually becoming head designer for the company. He worked extensively in porcelain, glass and enamelled steel, and it was in the latter medium that he collaborated on a joint project between Finel Arabia and Danish lighting company Fog & Mørup in the mid 1970s. Franck's design philosophy was that an object should be durable, robust, easy to clean, functional, indispensable, and do justice to the materials used for it.
