In his 1958 design for the Egg chair, Danish architect Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) created what is now one of the world's most iconic and widely recognised item of furniture. In addition to furniture Jacobsen designed textiles, wallpaper, tableware, taps, clocks and lights, the latter being produced by Louis Poulsen. Many of his best-known works were created for the 1958 SAS Royal Hotel project, for which he designed both the building and the interior fixtures, fittings and furniture. Interior design – known in Denmark as industrial design – was an integral part of architectural education at Copenhagen's Kunstakademiet, where Jacobsen studied and was later a professor. After completing the drawings for a building, instead of handing over the planning of the interior to others, Danish architects would go all the way to the back door, literally, and depending on the client's wish, this could include lamps, furniture, door handles and more.
