Semi pendant light 25cm diameter designed by Bonderup and Thorup and produced by Fog & Morup, 1970s

Entitled Semi, this arc-shaped enamelled metal pendant light was designed by architects Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup in 1967 while the pair were still students at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and subsequently put into production by prestigious Danish lighting company Fog & Morup. Semis were produced in a number of sizes, with diameters ranging from 25cm to 70cm (10 to 27.5 inches), and were manufactured individually by hand by a skilled metalworker who would spin a 1.5mm thick aluminium plate onto a steel form and mould it into shape with a leather-covered baton.

The stylish Semi quickly became a classic, and remained in production through the 1970s and even after the Fog & Mørup brand disappeared following a series of mergers in the 1980s. This particular example, however, bears its original Fog & Mørup label, which dates it to the 1970s. In white, with a diameter of 25cm, this is the smallest of the Semis and suitable as a decorative accent light. It remains in very good condition, with a scattering of small marks visible on close inspection (see close-up photos), and takes a small Edison screw bulb max 40w (not supplied). Fog & Mørup's catalogues recommended the use of a crown silver bulb with the Semi to prevent glare, though the lamp is pictured here with an ordinary non-silvered bulb.
