Mars copper 1970s pendant light by sculptor Max Sauze

Born in Algeria in 1933, French sculptor Max Sauze has created two tranches of lighting in his career to date – the first in the 1970's and the second in 2000. This rare example, entitled Mars, is from the earlier period, and the black and white image included here shows a collective display of that group of lighting works.

With a diameter of 18cm (7 inches) and a height of 20cm (8 inches), this is a very rarely seen copper version of the 1970's Mars light, with a glossy orange interior coating that casts a fiery glow onto the shiny copper when the lamp is lit. The orange interior is in excellent condition with minimal damage. The copper exterior is in good condition with generalised minor spotting and two patches of damage, the larger patch measuring 0.75 x 2cm. This can be seen on the top strip of the lamp in the images right and below. The second, smaller patch measures 0.4 x 3cm and is on the bottom strip on the opposite side of the lamp. There is very little in the way of scratching or other surface abrasion, so the general overall impression of the lamp remains shiny and highly presentable.
