Soholm ceramic bird tile by Noomi Backhausen

This vintage stoneware wall plaque was designed and created by Noomi Backhausen at Søholm Stentoj on the island of Bornholm, Denmark in the late 1960's to early 70's. In characteristic Backhausen style there is an emphasis on texture, with some areas left raw, rough and barely glazed while others are carefully sculpted or filled with rich, blood-like and glass-smooth enamel glazing. Incised on the reverse side with the Søholm Bornholm imprint together with the edition number 3574-4 and the letter F, the tile weighs in at a substantial 1.1 kilos (2lbs 7oz) at a size of around 18cm (7 inches) square with a 2.5cm (1 inch) depth. It has a strong copper wire hanging loop running through holes in the ceramic and is in excellent condition.
